| Jon Jarvis to Head NPS Pacific West Region
Jarvis comes to the Pacific West Region from Mount Rainier National Park in Washington where he served as Superintendent. Jon has been serving the NPS for over 25 years in a variety of positions beginning in Washington, D.C. where he was an interpretive park ranger on the National Mall. Mr. Jarvis was appointed to his first Superintendency in 1991 at Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. In 1993 he became Superintendent of Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska, the largest unit of the National Park System. He has served as the president of the George Wright Society as well as lectured and published papers on the role of science in parks around the nation. Mr. Jarvis has extensive experience in developing government–to–government relations with Native American tribes, gateway community planning, major facility design and construction, as well as wilderness and general management planning. He has received over 20 awards including the Department of the Interior’s Meritorious Service Award for his work in Alaska. Mr. Jarvis is a native of Lexington, Virginia. He has a B.S. in Biology from the College of William and Mary, and has completed graduate work in public policy and natural resources. He is married and has two children, ages 19 and 17.
