CBC Awards Chapel & Stewart

Mike Chapel (U.S. Forest Service, far left) and Bill Stewart (Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, far right) receive Superior Service Awards from the CBC Co–Chairs Mary D. Nichols, Secretary for Resources, and Mike Pool, State Director, Bureau of Land Management, California.

The California Biodiversity Council took the opportunity to make a special presentation at the August 2002 regional meeting in Alturas, California. The Council honored two people who do an incredible amount of work behind the scenes. Mike Chapel (United States Forest Service) has led the CBC Staff Committee for the past two years. Before him, Bill Stewart (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection) led the Committee for three years. With the small amount of personnel assistance and support available to the CBC, this position is of the utmost importance.

The Staff Chair is responsible for corralling the federal, state, and local agencies of the Council to coordinate the operations. The Staff Chair reports to the Executive Committee on a variety of matters ranging from strategic planning and policy analysis to regional meeting planning and budget concerns. Furthermore, the Staff Chair assumes the leadership role in developing and coordinating the quarterly regional and statewide meetings.

The CBC presented small tokens of appreciation to Mike Chapel and Bill Stewart—two men of great ability that the Council has been fortunate to have as its operational backbone. Without their committed and common–sense leadership, the California Biodiversity Council would not be the strong and well–planned body it is today.
