"Beyond Sprawl: New Patterns of Growth to Fit the New California," calls for a new commitment to managing growth in California in order to improve the state's competitiveness and quality of life.
Sponsors of the 11-page report the California Resources Agency, Bank of America, Greenbelt Alliance, and the Low Income Housing Fund believe that California must pursue growth and development that is sustainable, and that unfettered sprawl will make the state less competitive, burden taxpayers with higher costs, degrade the environment, and lower the quality of life for every Californian.

"Life on the Edge: A Guide to California's Endangered Natural Re sources," (Heyday Books, $75 hard cover, $45 paperback) describes the state's endangered species and why they are important to the environment. The easy-to-read 549-page book is the work of the National Audubon Society, Southern California Edison, and BioSystems Analysis. The introduction describes California's bioregions and the impact of development and conservation legislation. Each section of the book begins with a Native American legend and an interview with an expert about wildlife endangerment. This inviting book presents the story of endangered species in a nontechnical manner, including estimates of remaining populations, significant threats to survival, and current conservation and recovery measures. Map insets show range and distribution.
ß The publication includes 462 photos and illustrations 342 in color sidebars and short essays about observations of 19th century travelers, consequences of oil spills and water diversions, the DDT disaster, and butter fly poaching. Glenn Olson, western regional vice president of the National Audubon Society, says the book is a valuable tool for biologists, planners, consult ants, and resource managers. "This book beautifully makes the case for preserving, restoring, and sustaining California's rich, extraordinary biodiversity," Olson said.
