Robert Irwin shows the Forum how the U.S. Forest
Service firefighting gear has changed in 50 years, from, at left,
the standard hat, vest, amd canteen of the 1940's, to the uniform
of today, which includes helmet, pants, 20-lb. pack, and shirt
displayed by Judie Tartaglia, deputy supervisor of the Tahoe
National Forest. Says Irwin of the old days, "Gloves were for
sissies."
