

Highways opened
the Sierra Nevada to population growth and year-around tourism. About 70 percent of the current population of 650,000 lives in the west-side foothills, particularly El Dorado and Placer counties. The mountain range is projected to grow to between 1.5 million and 2.4 million by the year 2040.
