Mountain slopes, forests, and meadows of the Sierra Nevada are rich in biodiversity, inhabited by some 300 mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian species -- about 60% of California's vertebrates. Sixty-nine of these species are considered at risk by federal or state agencies. Loss of habitat is the biggest cause of their decline.
