Natural Resources Fellowship Program Seeks New Applicants

Natural Resources Fellowship opportunities are available for professionals in departments under the Resources Agency to study at the University of California, Davis in areas of specific expertise during the 1997-98 academic year.

The fellowships enable six staffers to take a sabbatical from state service and collaborate with UC Davis faculty members in both applied scientific and technological research.

"The partnership between the Resources Agency and UC Davis, which created the fellowship program, enables working professionals with considerable expertise to work closely with their academic counterparts," Secretary for Resources Doug Wheeler said. "This professional communication benefits both the stewardship of our natural resources and the educational experience that UC Davis offers."

Announcements will be made by the Resources Agency and UC Davis in March, and applications are due in June. Applications, questions, and comments should be directed to the Public Service Research Program UC Davis, Davis, CA, 95616, telephone: 916-752-7823; FAX: 752:7748; or e-mail: dfpendleton@ucdavis.edu. Also, Janine Stenback, Resources Agency, 1416 Ninth Street, Room 1311, Sacramento, CA, 95814, telephone: 916-653-5656; FAX: 916:653:8102, or e-mail: janine@resources ca.gov.

The new class will be the third under the program, which was developed by a 1994 agreement between the Resources Agency and University of California and has sponsored fellows for two academic years.

UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef said the fellowships demonstrated in their first year the value of sharing access to scientific information and its public application.

"There is no other program quite like this that helps to develop both public education and research," he said.
