Decade of Diversity: California Biodiversity Council, 1991-2001

This fall, the California Biodiversity Council will commemorate ten years of accomplishments since signing the Agreement on Biological Diversity in September 1991.

This special tribute to be held in Yosemite Valley will begin with Mr. David Mihalic, Superintendent of Yosemite National Park, introducing a discussion of the social and cultural changes within the park, how they relate to California as a whole, and how the Biodiversity Council fits into this extraordinary picture. Superintendent Mihalic will speak at the site of the original Superintendent’s residence—a spectacular location seated at the confluence of the Merced River and Yosemite Creek. To the north lies El Capitan and Yosemite Falls, while Half Dome rises up at the west end of the Valley.

The celebration will continue with a special retrospective video presentation, awards ceremony, gourmet dinner, and keynote speech in the Solarium of the Ahwahnee Hotel. The video presentation will include interviews of past and present Council members as well as quotes and pictures from the ten–year history of the CBC. This day will celebrate not only the foundations and accomplishments of the Council, but also the potential for future successes.

An additional tribute to this first decade of the Biodiversity Council was inserted in the print version of this newsletter. This special 20–page publication honors not only the unique creation of the Council, but those participants who made significant impacts and the Council’s travels throughout California.
