Energy–Saving Winter Tips for
Your Home
We all still need to conserve energy in California. As we enter the
fall and winter seasons, here are a few tips to help us all use less energy at home and at work.
Turn Down Your Thermostat
- For every degree you lower your heat in the 60–degree to 70–degree range, you’ll save up
to five percent on heating costs.
- Wear warm clothing and set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower, health permitting.
- Set the thermostat back to 55 degrees or off at night or when leaving home for an extended time.
Eliminate Wasted Energy
- Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. Unplug that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don’t truly need it.
- Turn off kitchen and bath–ventilating fans after they’ve done their job.
- Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning.
Reduce Hot Water Temperature
- Set your water heater to the "normal" setting or 120 degrees.
Plug Your Home's Leaks
- Weather–strip, seal, and caulk leaky doors and windows, and install foam gaskets behind outlet covers.
Use Appliances Efficiently
- Do only full loads when using your dishwasher and clothes washer.
- Use the cold water setting on your clothes washer when you can.
Be Energy Smart with Office Equipment
- Turn off office equipment or set it to “power down” when not in use, saving up to 40 percent of energy costs.
- Remember to turn equipment off at the end of the workday.
