Between 17 and 19 percent of U.S. citizens have some level of disability falling into one of four categories: Blind/Low Vision, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Mobility, and Cognitive and Specific Learning Disabilities. These statistics by the Census Bureau also report that with the population aging and the likelihood that disabilities can increase with age, the growth in the number of people with disabilities is expected to accelerate in the coming decades. In accordance with this trend, Governor Davis recently launched a comprehensive “eGovernment” initiative requiring every agency and department to adhere to technical standards for accessible Web design and compatibility. This will ensure that the content of all State sites can be reached by the widest audience regardless of disability, limitations of computer equipment, or use of alternate Internet access devices. The CBC website recently emerged with a brand new design complying with these accessibility standards. The website address and the general structure of the site remain the same, but at your next opportunity, check out the updated Biodiversity Council website: ceres.ca.gov/biodiversity.
