| Supervisor Steve Bennett: The CBC's Newest Representative
With a strong interest in environmental issues, sustainability, and supporting biodiversity, Supervisor Bennett took a particular interest in the problem of urban sprawl in Ventura County. To that end, he co–authored a series of SOAR (Save Open Space and Agricultural Resources) ballot measures in the late 1990s.
The SOAR ballot measures require that voter approval be obtained before land zoned as open space or agriculture can be rezoned for development. A series of eight ballot measures were approved by voters, and Ventura County is now completely covered by SOAR.
Steve Bennett graduated from Brown University in 1972 with an Honors degree in economics. He was a high school teacher and administrator for over 20 years before being elected to the Board of Supervisors.
Currently, Supervisor Bennett is actively working for the removal of Matilija Dam located on the Ventura River. The removal of this 200–foot high dam would grant access for endangered steelhead species to miles of prime spawning area in the upper reaches of the Ventura River watershed.
Matilija Dam has almost completely silted up and serveing no useful purpose. Ventura County has recently embarked on a feasibility study through the United States Army Corp of Engineers, which Supervisor Bennett is monitoring closely.
Steve said he is looking forward to working and learning with fellow members of the California Biodiversity Council.
