| National Biological Information Infrastructure: California Information Node http://cain.nbii.gov The Information Center for the Environment at UC Davis is the lead organization and host of the regional NBII California Information Node.
NBII is an electronic information network that provides access to a plethora of biological data and information on our nation’s plants, animals, and ecosystems.
Data and information maintained by federal, state, and local government agencies, non–governmental organizations, and private sector organizations are linked through the NBII gateway. They are made accessible to a variety of audiences including researchers, natural resource managers, decision–makers, educators, and students, among others.
The NBII California Information Node (CAIN) will explore and demonstrate solutions for data discovery, exchange, and interoperability that will be important for all the nodes, as well as begin the work of federating datasets critical to the biodiversity work being done in the region.
UC Davis is also collaborating with the NBII program in several other areas, including international databases, species and protected areas, standards development, and environmental informatics. These activities provide the standards and infrastructure to integrate several databases across California.
